Computing

Computing at Thornhill will equip the children with the knowledge that technology plays a pivotal part in everyday society. Our children will know how to use technology positively, responsibly and safely. The curriculum encompasses computer science, information technology and digital literacy. We want our pupils to be fluent with a range of tools to best express their understanding and hope by Upper Key Stage 2, children have the independence and confidence to choose the best tools to fulfil the task.

We follow the Teach Computing scheme, which sets out the aims and programmes of study for Computing, ensuring that our curriculum coverage is consistent across year groups and key stages, whilst also ensuring that disciplinary knowledge is built upon each year. The purpose of this, is to ensure that all teachers are able to support pupils in developing their own knowledge and understanding about Computing, resulting in them being able to make appropriate links to learning within the community and throughout their lives.

Respectful:

As part of the computing curriculum as pupils get older they will be encouraged to make their own choices, which will create children who are confident with computing skills. By increasing confidence, we will enrich their outlook on technology and by asking questions this will encourage their learning.
Today’s children and young people are growing up in a digital world. As they grow older, it is crucial that they learn to balance the benefits offered by technology with a critical awareness of their own and other’s online behaviour, and develop effective strategies for staying safe and making a positive contribution online. Pupils will know the appropriate use of technology and social media whilst also having a healthy relationship with technology and know the suitable amount of time in which should be spent on computers, tablets and gaming.

Resilient:

Children will build their computational thinking effectively with or without a computer. They will be able to look at any technological problem and use their computational thinking to solve it.
By developing this skill, our children will be able to generate algorithms, successfully use debugging to solve any problems and use coding to create a range of resources that encompasses skills from other subjects.

Ready:

By preparing children for a world of technology, we will enrich childrens’ knowledge of future careers in coding and programming and they will understand the benefits technology has to offer as well as being prepared to use a range of technology appropriately.
Pupils will be given the opportunity to explore exciting programmes that encourage children to want to use technology. Learners will understand that technology is everywhere and be able to identify any technology they encounter whilst having a growing understanding of how it works.
