Religious Education

At Thornhill, we follow the agreed syllabus approved by the Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education (SACRE) 2022-2026. It provides a coherent framework for setting high standards of learning in RE, and enabling pupils to reach their potential in the subject. The syllabus is a local, professional, legal and up to date way of delivering all pupils’ RE entitlements. In order to meet the requirements of the curriculum we follow the NATRE curriculum.

At Thornhill, we believe that Religious Education (RE) plays an important role in promoting spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development, as well as understanding the diverse beliefs and values in our modern society. However, we fully respect the rights of parents and carers. Under the School Standards and Framework Act 1998 (Section 71), parents have the right to request that their child be excused from all or part of the RE curriculum and collective worship provided by the school. You do not need to give a reason for making this request.

The context of RE at Thornhill is that of an urban primary school in a multicultural, diverse community; serving children in the age range 3-11.Tolerance and knowledge are at the forefront of RE teaching at Thornhill because children often come to school with misconceptions about other beliefs and cultures.
We are a multicultural community: 25.6% of children are White British with 67% other Ethnic Groups, the vast majority of these children are practising Muslims. We recognise the variety of religious and non-religious backgrounds from which our pupils come. The children are taught to be sensitive to the home background of each child and to welcome the diversity of their beliefs.
Children express with growing precision and depth their own views and ideas about religion and beliefs.

Children increasingly learn strategies to manage emotions and develop a positive sense of self, understanding their own beliefs and show tolerance for others.
Children think with growing confidence about different views and ideas in RE.
