Geography

Our intent for the geography curriculum at Thornhill is to inspire pupils with a curiosity and fascination to learn about geographical key concepts including; locational knowledge, place knowledge, human and physical geography and geographical skills and fieldwork.

Respectful:

As geographers, children will be taught about the world and its people so that they are able to understand about their place in the world. Within this, they will understand human and physical geographical features and learn about significant places and people. They will investigate how geographical factors have had an impact on an area and its people including physical and emotional well-being. This sequenced learning will link to local and global issues / places and they will discuss what impact they themselves can make.
This diverse curriculum will facilitate our children in deepening their geographical knowledge, skills and vocabulary to understand the diverse community they belong to. Teaching will be adaptable to allow children to have opportunities to understand ‘current events’ and make links to previous learning.

Resilient:

Children will also be given opportunities to conduct fieldwork to collect, analyse and communicate their findings using a range of sources (to include maps, globes, photographs and digital mapping) to enable our children to become ambitious and successful in their learning.

Ready:

We aim to create enthusiastic learners who love enquiry-based learning and use this to explore geographical concepts and themes. The children will demonstrate investigated understanding and be able to offer explanations about their learning. Our children will feel empowered to extend their learning both in and out of school.
